Ahhh Yes, Motivation…

That word thrown around by so many, yet mastered by so few. You wonder if motivation even matters at all.

However, what if motivation is the one thing that makes you succeed?

Making a new habit is what we are all about. A new habit is like a new car, and motivation is like the engine. Without the engine your sweet new 1980’s Delorean will go absolutely nowhere.

Let’s explore this…

…because it is super important. How can I define the importance of it? Like this, it’s almost as important as Super Mario’s ability to jump!

Motivation goes with habit building like peas and carrots. Like an engine to a car. Like Luigi to Mario. Gasp!

Big Idea 1: Nail Your “Why” and you get motivated

Without a WHY it’s difficult to really fulfill your new habit or goals. If motivation is the engine, the Why is a Key which starts that engine. What’s the purpose of owning a sweet sweet Delorean if you can’t even drive that thing.

What is a “why” then? It’s a destination. It’s a purpose. It’s a dream. It is the end result of what you are doing in the first place. Yes it is related to the new habit you are forming, but let’s dig a bit deeper. The new habit might and should be part of a larger life goal.

For example, let’s say the new habit you are forming is to eat a healthier diet. Is “eating a healthier diet” the “why” of this equation? No, It’s part of a larger system of goals with the end purpose of losing weight. Eating healthy works towards that end goal…but so does a new workout plan, sleep schedule, and general lifestyle changes. Losing weight IS the WHY!

Big Idea 2: Focus keeps you going

You’ve nailed down your “why.” That means you have turned the key on your Deloreans engine and are now driving forward. Habits are easy to start, but hard to finish. Once you reach your destination though habits are sealed in your brain…literally.

Your brain is a dang super-computer which has unlimited potential by design. Our brains were created to be like this. Therefore to seal a new habit takes about 30 – 90 days (not 21 days like most believe). Where is it stored in that noggin of yours? Right inside the section of your brain called the Basal Ganglia. *NOTE – This is only the average, some types of habits could take longer.* Then where does focus come in?

Focus is the GAS that keeps your gosh-darn Beautiful Delorean moving forward towards the goal.

Maintaining laser like focus keeps your eyes forward. What happens if your eyes look away from the road while you are driving? Are you trying to wreck your Delorean??? There’s only like 6500 original Deloreans left in the world! It’s easy to crash when your eyes move from the road in front of you which makes it difficult to keep moving forward.

Ever heard about keeping your eyes on the prize? It’s the same flippin thing. What happens when you focus on the end result? It turns the key to that engine called motivation, which drives you ever closer to your end goal, while focus keeps you moving forward until you finally get there.

Big Idea 3: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

If you persist, you will succeed. I didn’t make that up. It’s a theology proven throughout history and written about by some of the greatest thought leaders out there. Og Mandino talks about it in his awesome book “The Greatest Salesman In The World.” In one of his scrolls to success he proclaims the following:

“I will persist until I succeed…

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal. Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet success hides behind the next bend in the road. Never will I know how close it lies unless I turn the corner.

Always will I take another step…”

Well smack me in the face. That’s some deep wisdom right there.

Also it needs to be said that crashing is going to happen every now and then. Because we are human and make mistakes. What will separate you from others is your ability to get back in the drivers seat and keep going. Failure tends to sideline us, that’s why persistence is so very important.

Once you reach that destination. That Goal. That habit. It’s good to celebrate! Get excited. Proclaim your victory to the world. Let all of those around you know about your hard work and effort to get to this point. Post a pic on the “Gram”, Jump up and down for the “TicToks”, or just let out a simple Tweet (which happens to be Tweety Birds favorite social platform).

Then after you celebrate and maybe even took a short break, eventually you will  ask the real question:

“I finished forming my habit, now what?”

Once you reach your new goal, or habit, or dream…then what? You must Keep going with a new habit which works towards your ultimate #LifeGoal. Keep Moving Forward…AND I have some good news. Most habits will be permanently placed in your brain in less time than you think. The Journey to your destination is what lifes all about anyways right? Just Keep Going!

Motivation, New habit, Motivation, Repeat…

Nerdy conclusion

Let’s recap this and keep it simple.

  1. Nail down your purpose or “Why” you need to make this new habit or goal in the first place.
  2. Stay focused to keep the momentum going once you are moving towards that end goal.
  3. Finally, celebrate your success, and keep moving forward to the next habit which you need to form.

Let’s get nerdy on this with the following equation:

  • Motivation = Engine inside the Delorean.
  • Purpose = Key to ignition on Delorean.
  • Focus = Gas to run the Delorean.
  • Persistence = Coffee to stay awake while driving the Delorean.
  • Celebrate = Because the car in this metaphor is….a Delorean.

That’s all for now my friend. You’ve got this, and Habitification has your back. Let’s work together to grow new habits into an incredible new Life.
